Davon Reed (SG/SF, Miami)

Measurables: 6’5.5”, 7’0” wingspan, 206 lbs, 21.9 years old

Strengths

  • Smooth, skilled 3 point shooter – 39% 3-point, 83% FT
  • Competes on defense – slides his feet hard
  • Closes out well, uses his length
  • Initiates contact around rim, isn’t fazed by rim protectors
  • Gets 3-point shot off under any circumstances
  • Isn’t afraid of contact near rim – 61% at rim, created many looks himself
  • Can get up a little bit for lobs/dunks
  • Plays hard on defense, uses wingspan
  • Length makes him seem bigger than he is

Weaknesses

  • Doesn’t possess elite athleticism, gets beat by quick guys
  • Gets mixed up on screens sometimes
  • Can get caught jumping towards guys instead of sliding feet
  • Very poor shooting on 2 point jumpers – 34%
  • Not much of a creator for others – 14.4 AST% to 13.7 TOV%
  • 22 year old
  • Often settled for bad mid-range looks
  • Sometimes just swipes in help defense
  • Not good finding man to box out

Overall

  • Reed is a good player, as he’s got good size and length for a 2 guard and is a legitimate 3 point shooter. However, he’s not a great athlete and hasn’t played elite on the defensive end at the college level. His lack of contribution on offense outside of shooting makes it hard to see what he does besides shoot in the NBA, but at least he’s got size on his side defensively. A team taking him will have to hope they can utilize his frame and shooting ability and create a 3nD threat.
