Isaiah Hicks (PF, North Carolina)

Measurables: 6’8.5”, 7’0” wingspan, 233 lbs, 22.8 years old

Strengths

  • Very bouncy, able to go up and grab lobs
  • Good ability contesting on perimeter
  • Blossoming faceup game
  • Switch ability thanks to athleticism
  • Solid rim running ability
  • Great lateral quickness against guards
  • Good combination of athleticism and strength
  • Solid defensive metrics last season
  • Comfortable as a role player
  • Nice finisher at rim – 75.5%

Weaknesses

  • Not much of a rebounder even given physical tools – 12.5 TRB%
  • Not great PF size at NBA level
  • Extreme issues fouling – led ACC in fouls 2 years in a row
  • Turnover issues on offense (2.8 per 40)
  • Very limited offensive game – basically just dunks
  • Defensive mobility comes with caveat of fouls
  • Will have to add to offensive game to earn real PT
  • Will be 23 when season starts

Overall

  • Hicks is a good athlete who projects to be a useful defender with the ability to guard 4s well and check 3s and 5s, but his fouling problems and offensive limitations put a pretty clear cap on his game. His motor and defensive usefulness could help him crack a roster but it’s hard to see him playing much of a role at the NBA level. The hope for him is that 2 seasons of playing an important role in an NBA-level frontcourt will earn him a spot in an NBA frontcourt.
