Kristina Mladenovic came out on top of Yulia Putintseva.

With this win, French-national Mladenovic has gained her first singles title after a few years of doubles success. She had lost three finals previously. On her way, she beat Venus Williams (no. 11) and defending champion Roberta Vinci (no. 21). Her win over Williams was her first top 15 win in half a year.

Mladenovic was touted as a future star when she won the Juniors title at Roland Garros in 2009 and was then the world juniors number 1. However, more of her success on the WTA tour after that has been in doubles, where she has 16 doubles titles, including three grand slams.
Putintseva put up a spirited fight, twice breaking Mladenovic as she served for the championship. She has also had a successful week, with wins over Dominika Cibulkova and Svetlana Kuznetsova.
About her win, Mladenovic said, “I had to remain calm. She came back strong in the second set, but I managed to get that first title.”
Kiki’s WTA ranking will climb to no. 31 in the world. She is currently world no. 3 in doubles.
