Malcolm Hill (SG/SF, Illinois)

Measurables: 6’6”, 6’9” wingspan, 234 lbs, 21.6 years old

Strengths

  • Aggressive athlete who plays hard on both ends
  • Strong frame allows him to finish well
  • Good ball-handling skills
  • Very passionate guy
  • Improved a lot as a playmaker over the course of his time at UI
  • Young for a college senior
  • Solid frame to play 2-4
  • 70+% finisher at rim all 4 years
  • Good decision maker – 18.4 AST% to 11.0 TOV%

Weaknesses

  • Jumper is good but not great
  • Took a lot of 3 pointers with only middling efficiency – 35.5% on 6.3 3PA/40
  • Hard to pick out an NBA skill on offense
  • Gambles a lot on defense
  • FG% in the low 40s is concerning
  • May struggle to adapt to being a role player
  • Doesn’t get to rim a whole lot
  • IQ questionable on both ends
  • Not a phenomenal athlete
  • Game has questionable translation to NBA

Overall

  • Malcolm Hill had a solid 4 year career at Illinois, and is one of the youngest seniors in this class. However, it’s hard to peg something that Hill can surely do well at an NBA level besides his transition ability. Still, that’s been the story with guys like Josh Richardson and Norm Powell who have found success in the NBA out of the second round once they got their jumpers figured out. He compares favorably to either of those guys and with a bit of improvement to his 3 ball can possibly carve out a spot in an NBA rotation. The key for him will be consistently hitting from range and showing that his solid frame can contribute on defense. If not, he’s probably looking at a career in Europe.
