P.J. Dozier (SG, South Carolina)

Measurables: 6’7”, 6’11”, 200 lbs, 20.6 years old

Strengths

  • Gets to the rim quickly
  • Crafty finisher, good athlete
  • Jumper mechanics look better than percentages would indicate
  • Efficiency improved a lot between freshman and sophomore years
  • Great defensive metrics, projects as plus defender
  • Handles ball well enough to have it in his hands
  • Solid midrange game, projects for 3 point shot well
  • Plays hard, not afraid of traffic around rim
  • Solid guard post up game
  • Offensive struggles can somewhat be chalked up to playing in suffocating South Carolina offense

Weaknesses

  • 28% on 188 3 point attempts in college
  • 58% FT shooting is big red flag
  • Value stats pretty bearish on his offense
  • 47% TS
  • Needs to add strength if he wants to guard 3s
  • Under 41% shooting this season
  • Hard to project him contributing much on the offensive end
  • Does not have good college 3 point% like comps like Pat McCaw, George Hill, etc
  • Has to prove himself on offense

Overall

  • Dozier’s tools and defensive ability make him an attractive prospect, but he’s got red flags all over his offensive game. Yes, some of those can be attributed to the fact that he played in an offense where he was basically the only guy besides Sindarius Thornwell who could score, but it’s still worrisome, especially his low FT% and 2 point%. He struggled with shot selection and his jumper will have to improve to carve out playing time. He’s a crafty finisher but shot just 45% on 2 point shots last year. His offense has to improve to catch teams’ attention.
