Rickard Rakell has been a force for the Ducks
23-year-old Rickard Rakell is *quietly* leading the Anaheim Ducks in goal scoring this season. He is currently tied with Patrick Kane for 10th in the league in goals after scoring his 32nd of the year Wednesday night.
With the least goals for all of all teams currently sitting in a playoff position, the Anaheim Ducks have been in desperate need of goal scorers since Corey Perry has declined so much this season. Perry has just 14 goals on the year after scoring 30 or more the previous three seasons. Ryan Getzlaf has never been a goal scorer, topping out at 31 for his career and scoring just 14 last season. His current 14 goals and 48 assists is what’s expected of Getzlaf, while Perry has certainly not been himself.
Lucky for Perry, Rakell has taken over his spot as one of the top goal scorers in the NHL. Drafted in 2011 at 30th overall, the Swedish centerman is in his third full NHL season with the Ducks. In his previous two he scored a total of 29 goals in 165 games. His current season, however, turned into his breakout year, as he’s scored his 32 goals in just 62 games, adding 13 assists in that time. Rakell looks to be turning into one of the solid NHL goal scorers of the future, perhaps at some point in contention for the Maurice “Rocket” Richard trophy, as the NHL’s leading goal scorer. This will most likely not be that season, as Rakell currently sits 9 goals behind the league leader Sidney Crosby with only 9 games remaining in the Ducks season.
There’s lots of talk throughout the year about Crosby dominating the league in scoring by leading after having missed 6 games this season. 18-year-old Patrik Laine being tied for fifth in the league with his 33 goals on the year. Even a lot of talk and praise for Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand who has gone from the best pest in the NHL to second in the league in goal scoring behind only the best player in the world, with 37. No one seems to be mentioning the Anaheim Ducks top goal scorer who has brought himself to top ten in the league with some highlight-reel goals of his own this season, Rickard Rakell. Rakell has a bright future and years of scoring ahead of himself, as he continues to help the struggling Ducks offense win a lot of games.
