Sean Miller received two pieces of excellent news today.

Rawle Alkins is returning to Arizona for his sophomore season.

First, freshman wing Rawle Alkins withdrew his name from consideration for the 2017 NBA Draft and announced that he’d be returning to school for his sophomore season.

Alkins projected as a fringe first-round pick had he stayed in the draft.

The 6-5, 220-pound rising sophomore averaged 10.9 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 28.0 minutes a game last season, while shooting 37% from 3-point range and 73% from the foul line.

The powerful guard joins point guard Parker Jackson-Cartwright and shooting guard Allonzo Trier to form one of the best wing groups in college basketball.

In the frontcourt, the team will feature 7-0 center Dusan Ristic and arguably the top incoming freshman in college hoops, 7-0, 220-pound big man DeAndre Ayton.  Ayton is part of an impressive recruiting class that also includes 4-star shooting guard Brandon Randolph, 4-star power forward Ira Lee and 4-star combo guard Alex Barcello.

That incredibly strong class got even better today as Emmanuel Akot, a top-20, 5-star small forward from the 2018 class reclassified into the 2017 class and will join the Wildcats this fall.

“I chose to reclass because I know I’m ready,” Akot said. “I want to get better and I know I will get pushed everyday at Arizona. I’ll be on a really good team too so this is a great opportunity for me.”

“I’ve played and watched guys at that level and I know I can compete,” Akot said when asked why he thinks he’s ready for college next season. “I’m confident that I can come in and contribute right away.”

While the Wildcats do lose Kareem Allen, Kobi Simmons and Lauri Markkanen, there’s every reason to believe that they have a team that can contend for the 2018 NCAA Championship.
