Are we witnessing a historic NBA season between two of the game’s best?
.

Robertson
James Harden and Russell Westbrook are posting incredible numbers.

Could this NBA season be the equivalent of the 1998 MLB home run race? Granted the steroids have tainted both the legacies of Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa but you can’t deny it was one of the best seasons of baseball that captivated the country and made so many fall back in love with the game.

It seems at least of early January we could all be witnessing another record race, of a feat more than half a century old…one that not even the greatest players to touch sneaks to hardwood have had the opportunity to touch.

The elusive 41 triple-doubles.

With Russell Westbrook and James Harden both putting up insane numbers (Westbrook notched his 17th season triple-double this past week, Harden his 10th last night) and the halfway point of the season a little more than a month away it is a very real possibility that the two could both come close let alone breaking Oscar Robertson‘s number of 41 in a season. He finished the 61-62 season averaging 30.8 points 12.5 rebounds and 11.4 assists.Westbrook has 17 in 38 games currently averaging 31.4 points 10.6 rebounds and 10.3 assists. While Harden has 10 in 38 games and is averaging 28.2 points 8.2 rebounds and 11.8 assists. If both players continue this trajectory (Harden upping his rebounds obviously) Westbrook could potentially pass Robertson’s 41 in late March or early April and Harden can at least pass Wilt Chamberlain’s 31.If they both stay healthy and not focus on the record but focus on doing everything in their power for the W for their respective teams it can be done.

The 1998 MLB season was pure magic the longer the season went on the more America embraced the two sluggers.Near the end of the season every at-bat, every swing had each baseball fan young and old on the edge of their seat.Come the second half of the NBA season the fever pitch of the record that no one ever thought would fall will bring back fans in droves, and make new fans.

It’s always glorious watching history in the making in sports. The where were you when moments that fans speak of to their sons, daughters, and grandchildren.

The miracle on ice, Kobe’s 81 point game, the immaculate reception, Boston Red Sox 3-game 2004 ALCS comeback against the Yankees.Joe Namath’s guarantee.San Francisco 49ers “The Catch”.The list continues and soon will be added by another name: The Robertson Race.
