Wendell Carter is headed to Duke
Top recruit Wendell Carter has made his decision.
At the end, it came down to Duke and Harvard, and to the surprise of no one, the Duke Blue Devils came out on top in the race for this prized recruit.
Carter says that Harvard did receive serious consideration.
“When you think of Harvard, you think of a bunch of bookworms that are always in the library studying,” he wrote on his official blog for USA Today. “But when I went there and got to hang out with the players, I saw that Harvard is really just like most campuses even though it’s an Ivy League school. It’s really fun!
“Everyone is really laid back and nice, so I really liked that. I got to hang out with the staff and get to know the coaches better and play with the team.”
The odds were heavily in Duke’s favor as he and previous Duke commit Gary Trent Jr. were long considered to be a package deal.
This actually harkens back to last season when wing Jayson Tatum committed fairly early and that essentially made it a forgone conclusion that Harry Giles would commit later on.
Carter is something of a throwback type big man prospect. He’s tremendously skilled offensively when scoring the ball on the block but lacks elite athleticism. These traits make him more of a center prospect than a power forward prospect at the next level.
