Tyrese Maxey is headed to Kentucky.
5-Star point guard recruit Tyrese Maxey is the newest member of Kentucky’s 2019 recruiting class. Joining fellow 5-star prospects D.J. Jeffries (#16 overall) and point guard Ashton Hagans (#17 overall).
Hagans, however, is considered a likely candidate to reclassify into the 2018 class and join the Wildcats next season. Maxey has been taking classes in order to keep a potential reclassification open, but now looks to be sticking with the 2019 class.
A 6-3 combo guard from South Garland High School in Dallas, Texas, Maxey has a reputation of being one of the top scorers in his class.
Maxey picks Kentucky over Texas, Michigan, Michigan State and Oklahoma State — though it should be pointed out that Kentucky was a landslide favorite throughout the process.
From his blog post on USA Today:
“Kentucky has been my dream school ever since I can remember. I’ve wanted to play for Coach Cal since I saw him coach Derrick Rose. He does a great job of coaching guards and getting them to the next level. It’s a dream come true.”
Simply making the announcement appears to be a weight off of his shoudlers:
“Man I can’t tell y’all how glad I am to have this secret out. The reality is that I committed before the first live period a couple of weeks ago.”
While this past season’s Kentucky team was a little shallow at guard, it doesn’t appear that’s going to be an issue for the next couple of years with Hagans, 5-star PG Immanuel Quickley, 5-star SG Tyler Herro and 5-star SF Keldon Johnson joining holdovers like Quade Green and Jemarl Baker — with Maxey coming in the following season.
