Dexter Lawrence has the talent to become a high first-round pick.
Dexter Lawrence is a powerful player who at times can tip the scales up to 350 but is probably down about ten pounds from that. He was a five-star recruit out of high school and has played on a very good Clemson defensive line that includes Christain Wilkins, Austin, Bryant and Clelin Ferrell. I like the way he wins at the line of scrimmage and holds the point of attack. He also drew double teams in the run game early in his career. He is a good hand fighter for a guy his size as well. He can show quickness in the pass rush for a guy his size.
What I worry about with Dexter Lawrence is his motor. His tape is very hot and cold and he will need to be more consistent at the next level. He will not be able to call on the talent next to him to pick up the slack. I think he is a limited athlete because of his size. If teams want to play him in a 4-3, I would advise that he lose some weight. That way he can play with more physicality on every play.
I think Lawrence’s best position at the next level is as a nose tackle, but to get the most out of him, I would hope he loses some weight before the combine and then he can be used as a 2 gap defensive tackle. He has great potential and so I think he will be drafted in the mid-first round. I would put him behind Da’Ron Payne, Vita Vea, and Taven Bryan as far as tape, but I think he will go where they are based on potential.
