49ers' Arik Armstead placed on the IR

The 49ers have placed DE Arik Armstead on the IR.

The San Francisco 49ers have elected to place defensive lineman Arik Armstead on injured reserve.

The defensive end will miss the remainder of the season due to shoulder problems.

San Francisco has claimed Chris Jones off of waivers from the Dolphins to help fill the void at defensive tackle.

This has been a decision a long time in the making.  Armstead said this week that  he was planning on speaking to the 49ers and make a decision.

“It is what it is; it’s part of football,” Armstead said. “It’s been a process. I’ve been dealing with it for awhile now.”

Armstead has suggested that he may need surgery on the joint. It’s not yet known if that surgery has been scheduled.

“I don’t think it’s going to heal on its own,” Armstead said.

Armstead, the #17 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft has been a letdown for the 49ers to this point.

The Oregon defender has 15 tackles and 2.5 sacks this season after posting just 19 tackles and 2.0 sacks during his rookie season last year.

With Armstead out of the lineup, the 49ers will start DeForest Buckner and Quinton Dial at defensive end in their 3-4 front.
