Last week, I looked at 5 first-year MLS players who could have a big season. This time, I look at 5 more who, while less well known, could have a big impact just the same. Here are 5 under-the-radar players who could surprise people this season:
- Jay Simpson could make an impact for the Union.
Jay Simpson, ST, Philadelphia Union– A player who has spent most of his career in the English Championship, Simpson was lured to Philadelphia from League 2 side Leyton Orient. Despite playing in League 2 most recently, many felt that Simpson was above that level, and never should have ended up in League 2 to begin with. With Philly’s lack of depth of top, Simpson could very well win the starting job from CJ Sapong. Should he earn the starting job, I could see him surprising people with his goal-scoring ability.
- Leandro Gonzalez Pirez, CB, Atlanta United– The Argentine Centerback has spent time playing in his native Argentina with Estudiantes, Tigre, and River Plate, as well as a short spell in Belgium with K.A.A. Gent. With Atlanta being a bit thin at the back, Pirez is projected by most to be the opening day starter for the expansion side. He could prove to be a solid acquisition.
- Rasmus Schuller, M, Minnesota United– Despite requiring TAM to sign, nobody is really talking about the Finnish international. Known for his accurate passing, and intelligence on the field, the Fin could very well be an opening day starter for the Loons, and, despite not being flashy, should be a big part of whatever success Minnesota has this season.
- Gustav Svennson, M, Seattle Sounders– Arriving in Seattle from Chinese Club Guangzhou R&F, Svensson has played previously in Sweden, Ukraine, and Turkey. The Defensive Midfielder and Swedish international could win a starting job in the Seattle midfield, and exceed expectations this season.
- Cristian Colman, ST, FC Dallas- FC Dallas acquired the young Paraguayan striker from Paraguayan club Nacional Asuncion. FC Dallas has needed more depth at the striker position for a while now, and the 22 year-old Colman may help eliminate that need. While Colman probably won’t start right away, I could see him taking his chance and running with it, should he earn the chance to start.
