In a move that shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone paying attention, former SMU guard Keith Frazier is transferring to North Texas.
Frazier’s former AAU coach Erven Davis has said that Frazier reached out to North Texas coach Tony Benford recently to let him know of his plans. Frazier is in the process of enrolling at the school and should join the team in the next few days.
The 6-5 guard from Kimball High School was a McDonald’s All-American and SMU coach Larry Brown’s highest profile signing to date. (For the record, we’re not counting Emmanuel Mudiay due to the circumstances surrounding him).
Prior to leaving SMU for “personal reasons” the junior guard averaged 11.9 points and 4.4 rebounds a game for the Mustangs.
Frazier was reportedly not dealing well with the notion that he was the reason SMU was being punished with NCAA penalties after an investigation revealed that a former SMU secretary completed an online course for Frazier in 2013.
Among those sanctions, is a postseason ban for this season.
Things only got worse for Keith Frazier as he recently lost his spot in the starting line-up to freshman guard Shake Milton.
“He told me he wanted a fresh start,” Head coach Larry Brown said.
The Mustangs, ranked No. 8 by The Associated Press, are the nation’s only undefeated team, improving to 18-0 after Tuesday’s victory over Houston.
