Shea Patterson is a possible early-round quarterback who is often compared to Johnny Manziel. They say he is Johnny Manziel without the off the field problems. On tape, I can see the resemblance between the two’s games. The thing that helps Patterson make plays is his ability to dance around the pocket and avoid tacklers. He is able to extend plays and sometimes that leads to big plays. He also throws a nice deep ball which shows up more when he buys time in the pocket. The trait that makes Patterson attractive is the way he looked comfortable playing against Alabama. His game didn’t slow down against such a talented team. In terms of accuracy, he has had some decent showings.
One of the bigger problems that I see in Patterson’s game is his holding onto the ball. He needs to get the ball out quicker. He also has the issue of being short in stature and that leads him to get passes tipped. I also thought he had some games where his accuracy could be better. He is hot and cold when it comes to passing accuracy. I also saw this inaccuracy bleed into him missing on the deep ball. The deep ball is more his strength, but that still needs to be improved. In his passing, he needs to place the ball better to his receivers. This comes with accuracy issues. He also needs to work on his decision making. He throws risky passes.
Overall, I would put Shea Patterson in the Day two category. He doesn’t have the accuracy to be a Day one prospect. I think he will need to work on his pocket passing if he wants to go in the first round. He is a transfer from Ole Miss to Michigan; so, there is a chance that he turns his game around. He fits as a good college quarterback, but does he have what it takes to start in the NFL?
