Syracuse Downs Albany With Last-Second Goal

Syracuse scored late to get the win.

No. 6 Syracuse improves to 2-0 on the season while No.12 Albany drop to 0-1

Early in the game No.6 Syracuse battled back trailing 6-1 mid-way in the second quarter. In the first half goalie J.D Colarusso for Albany kept them in the game tallying up a handful of big saves. One of the biggest questions coming into the game was how LaRusso would play picking up his first start after the graduation of Blaze Riorden. Needless to say he looked fantastic despite letting the game winner in.

The Great Danes did a great job of keeping possession in the first relying on #5 Fields to quarterback their offense piling up 3 assists on the day. They dominated the first half relying on a couple 3 goal runs. #40 McClancy gave the Great Danes their first goal of the day just 3:33 in the game with a great running shot stinging the top right corner. Later in the first quarter #23 Burgmaster and #41 Lasda find the back of the net putting Albany up 3-1 to finish the first.

10 seconds in to the second quarter #10 Reh scores for Albany making the score 4-1. #48 Salcido momentarily leaves the game early in the second after receiving a big hit. #1 Voigt comes in for Salcido and is able to slow down the Great Danes, scoring off his knees making the score 6-2. #15 Carlin scores shortly after shifting the momentum towards SU’s side and cutting the lead to 3. Entering half-time the score was 6-3.

Entering the third quarter goalie Evan Molloy for Syracuse is on fire giving them all of the momentum. Early in the third #44 Lane hammers a goal, giving Syracuse their third straight and pulling within 2 goals. #12 Trimbolli puts another one up for Syracuse now putting them only down by one. Later in the quarter #45 Bomberry scores off a great assist from #23 Mariano tying the game up. #90 Fusco was able to break the tie with 2:01 remaining in the third scoring right off the crease. Syracuse’s defense took over the game shutting down top attackmen Fields and Ray for Albany. The Great Danes were scoreless in the third quarter.

To begin the fourth quarter #38 Eccles is able to get his hands free and ties the game for Albany 7-7. Albany is able to score back to back goals getting another one from #88 Drake which put them up 8-7 early in the fourth. #48 Salcido comes up big for Syracuse in the fourth quarter scoring back to back goals and giving them the lead 9-8 mid-way through the fourth. Salcido picks up his first of the season after being held scoreless last week against Sienna. Later in the fourth #38 Eccles finds his second goal of the game with the assist from #5 Fields. Fields was held scoreless all game but was able to find 3 assists on the day. Albany had a chance to take the lead with less than 2 minutes in the fourth. #11 Firman came up with a huge turnover setting up the game winning goal. With 6.7 seconds left on the clock and the possession with Syracuse, Albany calls a time out to go over their defense. Syracuse comes out of the time out with a flurry of missed shots leaving only a couple seconds left in the game. From the restart #3 Solomon brings the ball in from the end line, passes it up to #23 Mariano and he finds the back of the net with 1.6 seconds left.
