Ezequiel Barco to Atlanta United Official, Per Argentine Media

Ezequiel Barco is coming to Atlanta

According to reports, Atlanta’s acquisition of Barco will include the largest incoming transfer fee in MLS history, rumored to be $14M.

Barco is widely considered to be one of Argentina’s best prospects, so the fact that an MLS club was able to bring Barco in is a big deal for the league.

The Argentina U-20 international is certainly one of the biggest signings in MLS history and could help attract other young talent to MLS if it goes well. Barco is likely to use MLS as a “stepping stone” league to play in for a year or two before heading off to Europe, similar to what Miguel Almiron is doing.

If MLS can start to develop a habit of signing players like this, and Eredivisie-like reputation as a development league could follow.

Now obviously Barco is only one player, and he can’t shift the tide on his own, but you have to start somewhere. MLS may look back on this as a monumental signing someday, as they continue to move away from the “retirement home” label.
