Perhaps the summer’s most accomplished transfer candidate has found a new home.
Former Memphis forward Austin Nichols has decided to transfer to The University of Virginia. Â Nichols will have to sit out this season due to NCAA transfer rules and will have two years of eligibility remaining when he begins play in the 2016-2017 season.
Nichols was Memphis’ leading scorer as a sophomore last year with 13.3 points per game. Â He also averaged 6.1 rebounds, 3.4 blocks, 1.0 steal and 0.8 steals per game for the Tigers.
Virginia Coach Tony Bennett recruited the 6-foot-9 former 5-star recruit out of high school.
Why did he pick Virginia? Â Here’s what Nichols had to say.
“Even though it wasn’t close to my home in Memphis, it felt like my home from day one,â€
After initially announcing his intention to transfer, Memphis first denied his release, but then backed off that stance and gave him a conditional release stating that he could not transfer to another school in the American Athletic Conference, any school on the Tigers’ schedule or Virginia, Providence, Iowa and Tennessee.
Virginia was blocked because they will play in the same tournament as Memphis in 2016 (The Emerald Coast Classic).
Seeking a full release, Nichols retained a lawyer (Donald Jackson, ironically a Virginia alum) and Memphis withdrew the stipulation almost immediately.
