Mitch Hyatt is one of the better offensive tackles in this class.
Mitch Hyatt is a high effort blocker. His best trait is his footwork. He is never really beaten to the edge by speed rushers. His footwork helps him not be beaten by a lot of different moves. His steady anchor helps him absorb the bull rush. He is also a good blocker at the second level. He has a good punch that allows him to get under the defender’s arm. He also excels in his hand fighting. Hyatt also handles the blitz well and looks to get a part of his body on a blitzer. Hyatt also has a National Championship on his resume as he was the left tackle for that 2016 Clemson team.
His biggest weakness is the run blocking game. He can sometimes look like a different player when asked to run block. He has trouble staying on his feet at times and that will be a problem at the next level. His success in 2016 is also a little inflated by having DeShaun Watson as your quarterback. His speed can cover up a lot of weaknesses at the line. However, I still did not see him get beat a lot even when Watson was running. He also has somewhat of a problem with holding. Although he sometimes had to resort to obvious holding penalties, the benefit was the quarterback does not get hit.
Hyatt is a first rounder because of his pass blocking ability. He will be an NFL left tackle for somebody. What puts him behind prospects like Connor Williams and Mike McGlinchey is that he has trouble in the run blocking game. He is being projected as a top 3 offensive lineman and so I expect him to be in demand in the first round. Teams will be looking for left tackle type talent in the first round, especially coming off a weak draft for offensive lineman.
