Da’Ron Payne looks to be one of the better defensive tackles in this year’s draft.
Da’Ron Paynes comes from a good defensive line at Alabama, and he may be the best of that talented Alabama defensive line. His size is enough to be an NFL nose tackle, but his best trait is his athleticism. When left with a single blocker in pass protection, he is dangerous for the quarterback. His moves impress for his size as he can move laterally. This lateral movement shows up in the run game as well. He commands double teams at times and that probably deflates his statistics. He may not be getting the credit for a tackle on a play, but his drawing of double teams may pave the way for another member of the front seven to make a play. He probably could play a lot of different roles in the NFL. He has the size to be a zero technique but also the familiarity to play as a defensive tackle and the athleticism to play as a three-technique.
The weakness in Payne’s game is that he can be a bit “hot and cold” on the defensive line. He sometimes can be pushed by guards on the line. This is probably a concern in terms of motor. As a projected first round pick, you don’t want to have to sub him in, but you may have to.
Payne is a first-round talent in terms of run defense and pass defense. When he is on, he can play with the best of them. He is a star at Alabama and has shown the ability to perform in the SEC. The knock I have on him is his motor and that could get him dropped to later in the first round. He will be a starter day one, but will probably need to play in a rotation until he proves he has the stamina to play three downs.
