Carlos Santana and the $20 Million AAV

Does Carlos Santana deserve $20 million per season?

In one of the first and only major free agent moves this offseason, the Philadelphia Phillies upgraded their offense by signing first baseman Carlos Santana to a three-year, $60 million contract. Widely known for his on-base skills, Santana owns a career .365 on-base percentage, and from 2011-2017, saw the most pitches of any hitter in baseball at 19,313 pitches. Additionally, Santana has always had solid power numbers, as one of two players alongside Joey Votto to average 20+ HR and 100+ BB over the last five seasons.

A 2017 Gold Glove Award finalist at first base, Santana was named the Wilson Defensive Player of the Year at his position this past season. With his skills at the plate, increasingly strong defensive play at first, and his postseason experience with the Indians, Santana made a ton of sense for a Phillies team that is filled with young, on the rise players such as Rhys Hoskins and J.P. Crawford.

However, Santana, whose contract’s AAV (Average annual value) is $20 million per season for the next three years, is also a career .249 hitter and has never made an All-Star appearance in his eight years in the MLB. Since 2012, there have been eleven other free agent contracts for offensive players in the MLB that have exceeded an AAV of $20 million; here is where Santana fits in amongst these contracts, sorted in chronological order. (Note: This list only includes free agent contracts, and not extensions, such as those given to Mike Trout, and Giancarlo Stanton)

Of the players with an AAV of $20 million, Santana appears to be right in the middle of the pack based on WAR, which is the measure of a player’s overall value; this allows Santana’s value to be compared to that of players who relied on speed and defense, such as Heyward and Ellsbury. This begs the following question; did the Phillies overpay to make a splash this offseason, or has the value of $20 million been deflated in the MLB with the rise in revenue and television deals? Only time will tell, but for the time being, Carlos Santana will remain one of the more interesting free agent signings in recent memory.
