We examine Roy Halladay’s Hall of Fame resume.
From the years 2002-2010, no pitcher was better overall than Roy Halladay. Ranking first in wins and with Johan Santana the only pitcher among pitchers who made 250+ starts to have fewer losses, Halladay was incredibly consistent. Among those pitchers, Halladay also had 55 CG’s, 24 more than the next closest pitcher, Livan Hernandez. To say that Halladay competed would be an understatement. He WAS competition.
Those stats are only the traditional “column” stats. Among pitchers over this time period, Halladay was the only pitcher with three pitchers that carried a value over 50 points. To simplify those numbers, the “Pitch Value” is a way Fangraphs.com compares pitches between pitchers. It’s not a perfect system but can give some reference to how good different pitches were for different pitchers. A positive value is good, negative is bad, 0 is “average.” Halladay was the only one with what could be considered three “plus+plus” pitches over this time period.
His only pitch that garnished a negative score, his slider, barely even slipped over this time period, with a -0.3 value.
As far as consistency goes, from 2008-2011, over 1/4 of Halladay’s starts were complete games. With respect to efficiency of innings, Halladay averaged facing just barely over 4 batters an inning. That’s a lot of shut down innings, and an incredible amount of 0’s put up by one of the game’s greats.
An ode to you Mr. Halladay. From what I’ve read, you were as incredible a person as you were a tactician on the mound. The world has lost a wealth of pitching knowledge and is saddened by that fact.
