Mark Andrews has the makings of a big-time NFL tight end.
Mark Andrews sticks out on tape as a big, move tight end. He is speedy and tall with plenty of weight which makes him a big target. He is a good route runner for his size. His special trait is that he can find the holes in zone coverage so well. He was split out often at Oklahoma like a wide receiver, and that shows he can succeed in the slot. He has good hands that help him make the contested catch. Something I found unique about Andrews is that he has the body control to move over the line to get a first down. I think he will be a reliable receiving option on third-down at the next level. Mark Andrews was a decorated player at Oklahoma as he was the Mackey Award winner given to the nation’s top tight end.
The weaker part of Andrews game is his blocking. He can function as an in-line blocker, but that is not his strong suit. I have seen him block downfield on screens although a big body like Andrews should be able to dominate more. I thought he showed a bit of laziness on downfield blocks.
Andrews impressed me on tape, but I think his biggest obstacle in the draft is his position. Teams just don’t seem to value the tight end position as much. I think he will be a second-round pick based on the fact that he is a tight end. Also, the fact that he is not a dominant blocker will be another knock on him. I still think he will be able to enter the league and be a starting tight end. He may have to develop his in-line blocking to be a #1, but the receiving skills are already there.
