While talented, UCLA’s Josh Rosen does have a number of red flags.
Josh Rosen’s pocket presence is what stands out about him as a quarterback. I like the way he feels the rush and makes throws under pressure. He has the presence of mind to throw to receivers that are being held as well. He has a good arm that can make a lot of different types of throws. He also has the mobility to escape the pocket and he seems okay with throwing on the run. His throwing motion is well beyond his years and his footwork is technically sound. His early maturity also shows up in the trust the UCLA coaching staff puts into him, allowing him to audible. Jim Mora has said that he could be “great.”
Now with the early maturity, Rosen has shown there are still weaknesses that need to be improved upon in his junior year. I saw him make some mental mistakes like throw interceptions when the receiver is not even around. I also notice some accuracy issues on tape. The deep ball also could be improved as he needs to work on dropping passes into the “bucket.”
Overall, he is a quarterback with tons of potential and has shown the ability to make many different passes. I look for him to be more consistent and accurate in 2017 so that he can have his name called at the beginning of the 2018 draft. Of course, we have almost an entire year until that happens; so, it is too early to project him or assume that he comes out for the draft. Another thing to look out for is his injury issues as he was hurt with a shoulder injury for more than half of the later part of the season. He also has said some controversial things and is certainly not afraid to speak his mind. Overall, this is going to be an exciting prospect and storyline to follow.
