Third baseman Josh Donaldson and the Toronto Blue Jays have avoided arbitration by agreeing on an extension.
The new deal will pay Donaldson $29 million over the next two years.
The 30-year-old reigning American League MVP hit .297 with a .371 OBP, 41 home runs and 123 RBIs in his first season with the team.
During the postseason, he hit .261 / .370 with a home run and 4 RBIs.
Donaldson was acquired from Oakland last off-season in exchange for third baseman Brett Lawrie and three minor leaguers.
Ken Rosenthal reported last month that the two sides arbitration numbers were actually very close. Donaldson was asking for $11.8 million, while the Blue Jays submitted a number of $11.35 million. Given how close they were, there was really no chance that a new deal wouldn’t be worked out.
Donaldson’s new $14.5 million a year salary is a nice jump as he made just $4.3 million in 2015.
On his way to the MVP, Donaldson lead the American League in RBI with 123 and all of baseball in runs with 122.
