The Pirates have DFA’d Phil Coke in order to make room for Brady Dragmire
The Pittsburgh Pirates announced that they’ve picked up righty pitcher Brady Dragmire from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for cash.
The deal happened after Toronto DFA’d Dragmire last week, he was claimed by the Pirates, and a deal was worked out.
Dragmire isn’t a bad depth pickup considering the Pirates basically get him for nothing. The 23-year-old pitched with the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats in the Eastern League this season.
He finished with a 4-6 record, a 4.38 ERA, a 1.472 WHIP and 41 strikeouts in 72 innings.
Dragmire appeared in 45 games, all in relief.
The righty fits the Pirates desire to add heavy ground ball pitchers to their staff. Dragmire had a 63.6 groundball rate in AA this season.
As Dragmire had to be placed on the 40-man roster, the Pirates have DFA’d pitcher Phil Coke.
The 34-year-old Coke ended up in Pittsburgh late in the season, via trade. He pitched 4 scoreless innings for the Pirates.
