Browns LB Christian Kirksey to Sign Extension

I found out from an extremely reliable source this weekend that Christian Kirksey will be signing a major contract extension with the Cleveland Browns. It will be publicly announced in the coming weeks. This will be the second major signing for the Browns linebacking corps after Jamie Collins put his name on the Brown and Orange dotted line earlier this offseason. With a young and talented front 7, including DE Myles Garrett, DE Emmanuel Ogbah, NT Danny Shelton, along with Collins and Kirksey, the Browns are building the foundation of a talented group for years to come.

I have been a big Christian Kirksey fan since his days at Iowa. The Browns drafted him 71st overall in the 3rd round of the 2014 draft. It was one of my favorite mid-round selections for the Browns at the time and that continues to be the case. He has been a playmaker since day 1 with the team. Kirksey had a breakout season last year when he registered 148 combined tackles by way of 96 solo and 52 assists, to go along with 2.5 sacks.

He always seems to find himself at the right place at the right time. I could not tell you how many times I have said: “Is that Kirksey again?” over the past 3 seasons. Re-signing him is a huge get for the Browns. And maybe, just maybe, locking down Collins and Kirksey to long-term deals is proof that the attitude in the Cleveland locker room is changing (or it’s all that Flying J money being thrown around, but I choose to believe it’s the former). If the Browns can continue to follow the Indians model of developing players in their system, signing their biggest young stars to contract extensions before they hit free agency, and letting veterans past their prime walk away, they may actually be a contender sooner rather than later.
