Historically, MLS sides have struggled mightily against Liga MX opposition in the CONCACAF Champions League, but in Leg 1 of the Quarterfinals (the first round that clubs from the two leagues have met), MLS clubs got off to a dream start. New York Red Bulls won 2-0 in Tijuana behind a Bradley Wright-Phillips brace to start things off on Monday night.
Last night, Toronto beat Liga MX champions UANL Tigres 2-1 in Toronto with an 86th-minute winner from Jonathan Osorio, while Seattle won 1-0 over Chivas Guadalajara in Seattle, but were unlucky not to win by 2 or 3 goals.
All 3 ties are far from over though, especially the ones involving Toronto and Seattle, who will need to get results in Mexico in the return leg. Will this finally be the year that an MLS club beats a full-strength Liga MX side to win the CONCACAF Champions League? Stay tuned to find out.
