Chris Brown could take on Soulja Boy in a charity boxing match.
The short answer to both questions is maybe. Longer answer incoming.
But first, let me remind you of ‘Celebrity Boxing’, the awful television program that debuted on Fox in March of 2002. It’s official Wikipedia page defines it as “a television show, in which celebrities whose careers and/or notoriety had diminished were pitted against each other in exhibition boxing matches.” No paraphrasing from me there.
Back and better than… …well, back at least, we just may get the 15-year anniversary spectacular we’ve always dreamed of where Chris Brown beats the shit out of someone other than Rihanna – that someone, of course, being walking popsicle stick, Soulja Boy. Lucky us!
We’re so lucky, in fact, that we might be able to spend our hard earned money to watch it on PPV! Woo-hoo!
If you are still reading this for some reason then you might be wondering how it all started. I’ll try and give you the nutshell version.
Soulja Boy liked a picture of Chris Brown’s on again off again girlfriend Karrueche Tran. Brown and Soulja exchanged words with Soulja mocking Brown’s domestic violence case against Rihanna. Brown then retaliated with a video claiming Soulja won’t stop trying to FaceTime him and asked his friend Adrien Broner to set up a fight between the two. Soulja eventually brought Brown’s daughter Royalty into the conversation which (understandably – and that’s the only time I’ll use that word this article) upset Brown.
Soulja, who arguably started the beef then released another video on his Instagram proclaiming that “it’s not about who start the beefs, it’s about who end them” before justifying his actions with his moms recent hospitalization. Okay, fair enough Soulja.
Brown’s attorney got involved, threatening defamation and using the hashtag #teambreezy in the same tweet. Yes… tweet.
Soulja Boy asked the retired Floyd Mayweather to train him, who agreed, and both Soulja and Brown posted flyers for the event that looked photoshopped by 6-year-olds.
Then the semi-recently bankrupt, autistic janitor mocking and failed boxing promoter 50 cent stepped in. 50 called Mike Tyson who agreed to both “train” Chris brown and made his way to the studio to release a diss track for Soulja Boy.
Here is an excerpt. “You’re talking shit – on Instagram, but social media don’t make a fuckin’ man”
Somewhere along the way, Adrien Broner was seemingly muscled out of the equation while Brown posted a picture of himself photoshopped over the body of Muhammad Ali standing over Sonny Liston… which is straight blasphemy. If Brown even dreams he belongs in the same sentence as Ali he should wake up and apologize.
Which brings us to today, and the question of whether it will actually happen or not. I personally don’t think it will. I do think Chris Brown would try to fight a dog that barked at him wrong. His cannon is as loose as his skin is thin. Soulja is just struggling to stay relevant in a world where people wear clothes that fit now.
So the final question is whether or not it would be good for boxing. If it got new, young fans interested and involved in a sport that still dominates popular culture but has been on a decline, then I guess it would be. On the flip side, it might cost boxing credibility. It is a serious sport – dead serious at times – and watching two falling stars collide in some awkward battle of relevancy has never really proven to be successful.
I guess time will have to tell. The only positive I can pull out of this is that it will be for charity. If that charity isn’t getting Soulja Boy a tailor or Chris Brown a straight jacket, then I hope it goes towards ending domestic violence.
