Tyler Steenbergen has been incredible since being selected.
Most wouldn’t think much of a fifth-round pick in any sport’s entry draft, let alone the NHL. Fourth round picks and later are basically viewed by most to be just tacked-on pieces to make a trade go through. Most players selected this late in the draft generally do not pan out to be an NHL caliber player. There are, of course, exceptions to any rule. (See Johnny Gaudreau, a fourth-round pick and 60+ point scorer for three years straight.)
Nothing is concrete obviously, but it is beginning to look like the Arizona Coyotes may have found themselves a steal in their 2017 fifth-round draft choice Tyler Steenbergen. Playing for the Swift Current Broncos of the Western Hockey League, Steenbergen (19) leads the league in points and goals with 25 and 16, respectively. We are still at the very beginning of the season, so this has come in just 9 total games played. Steenbergen leads the league in points by a rather lot and is on pace for an incredible but more-than-likely unsustainable 200 points on the season. However, this extremely hot start is a fantastic sign for an Arizona fan. Another young, developing, and very skilled forward prospect in the farm system is just what this team will need in the future.
This 5’10” 187 lbs. forward potted 51 goals last year, good enough to tie him for first in the league. His 90 points in 72 games certainly got him a few extra looks, but if he sustains anywhere near this pace for an entire season, this kid will be moving up rather quickly. Look for Tyler Steenbergen to join the plethora of young forward prospects that seem to join the Coyotes each season over the next few years.
