David McCormack has committed to the Kansas Jayhawks,
The Kansas Jayhawks’ long tradition of being able to land top high school big men and mold them into NBA draftees is a powerful draw. David McCormack is the next man up.
Bill Self and the Jayhawks have landed a commitment from McCormack into their 2018 recruiting class.
He picks Kansas over offers from other finalists Duke, NC State, Oklahoma State, Xavier and UCLA.
McCormack, a Top 25 recruit and one of the top centers in the 2018 class, joins 5-star power forward Silvio De Sousa is a promising class.
For the emerging center, getting to play for Bill Self was a huge draw:
“Coach (Bill) Self is an amazing coach,” McCormack said. “He’s great as far as player development, relationships, he’s a winning coach, there’s a lot of history behind Kansas. … (I’m) looking forward to making more championships and more memories at Kansas.”
Thanks in large part of a year of dedicating himself to improving his body, McCormack has turned into one of the most highly sought-after recruits in the country. His high school coach Jason Smith talks about his progress.
“He was about 295 last year, he’s 255 now,” Oak Hill head coach Jason Smith recently told Zagsblog.com. “He’s got a great body now. That has helped him tremendously. He’s more mobile now, he plays above the rim instead of below the rim. His shot has improved to 17 feet. He’s an inside presence on both sides of the floor. He’s going to be a really, really good college player. I gotta give him credit because he lost weight but he’s the guy who changed his diet and lost the weight and it’ changed him into a much better player.”
In addition to McCormack and De Sousa, Kansas also has Memphis transfers Dedric and K.J. Lawson, as well as Cal transfer Charlie Moore as joining the team in 2018-2019.
