Measurables: 6’4.8”, 6’11.5” wingspan, 266 lbs, 23.3 years old
Strengths
- Extremely unique offensive game with his brutish girth combined with ability to step out
- Good weak side shot blocker
- Strangely effective ISO scorer
- Athletic enough to take NBA wing defenders off dribble (see Kansas game vs Josh Jackson)
- Makes up for severe lack of height with wingspan and weight
- Becomes matchup problem pretty quickly when his jumper gets going
- Generates lots of steals on defense as well – 3.3 STL%
- Often had to act as the main big man for Iowa State
Weaknesses
- Will be one of the oldest players in the draft, as he’ll turn 24 during next season
- His height is an obvious problem on defense and on the glass – 11.7 TRB%
- It’s very unclear who he will defend at the NBA level – too slow for 3s, too short for 4s
- Gets almost no elevation on his jumper – shoots almost a set shot at times
- Not a very good rebounder, which is a problem for undersized PFs
- Doesn’t create for others particularly well
- Value stats are pretty bearish on him – .132 WS/40
Overall
- Burton is a unique player as large and as short as he is. He has a unique but effective offensive game that routinely causes matchup problems. He’s an active and useful defender, but he’ll struggle to match up with guys at the NBA level. He’s not as good a rebounder as scouts would like to see given his limitations on defense and size-wise, which makes it very hard to play him as a unique PF. He’s also really old and combined with his size this will likely lead to him going undrafted with a long career in Europe.
