In an effort to upgrade their lineup, the Arizona Diamondbacks agreed to a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers that brings former All-Star shortstop Jean Segura to Arizona in a 5-player deal.
Right-hander Tyler Wagner also joins the Diamondbacks, while right-hander Chase Anderson, infielder Aaron Hill and highly-regarded minor league shortstop Isan Diaz head to Milwaukee.
Heading into the season hoping to compete, the Diamondbacks struggled through a 79-83 season in 2015.
This off-season, the team has gone all-in by signing top free agent pitcher Zack Grienke and trading for young All-Star hurler Shelby Miller.
Segura, 25, hit .257 with a .281 OBP last season, along with 6 home runs, 50 RBI and 25 stolen bases. He was an All-Star in 2013 when he hit .294 with 12 home runs, 49 RBI and 44 steals for the Brewers.
Wagner, 25, started 3 games for the Brewers last season with a 0-2 record and 7.24 ERA. Prior to being called up he was 11-5 with a 2.25 ERA in Double-A ball.
With Segura now in Arizona, a spot has opened up for one of Milwaukee’s top prospects, shortstop Orlando Arcia to win a big league position.
Heading to Milwaukee, Chase Anderson is 28-year-old starting pitcher who went 6-6 with a 4.30 ERA and 1.297 WHIP last season. He has the makings of a durable, back-of-the-rotation innings eater.
Aaron Hill, is a 33-year-old infielder who has seen time at second base, shortstop and third base. He hit .230 last season with a .295 OBP, 6 home runs and 39 RBI. Hill has made the All-Star team once, in 2009, while with the Blue Jays.
Young shortstop Isan Diaz has a chance to be the crown jewel of this deal for the Brewers. In 2015, with Missoula Osprey of the Pioneer League, the 19-year old finished third in the league in batting average at .360, second in home runs with 13, second in hits with 98 and third in RBI’s with 51. He was subsequently named MVP of the league.
