For the past three seasons, both Klay Thompson and Draymond Green of the Golden State Warriors have selected to participate in the NBA’s annual all-star game, but did they deserve it? With the inclusion of Kevin Durant, Thompson and Green have been the third and fourth scoring option respectively and were chosen instead of the likes of Chris Paul, and Paul George during this year’s all-star game.
Like many, I was very surprised to see these two players picked before some of the more deserving players in the league, such as the two I just mentioned. When we look at their numbers for this season, Thompson is averaging 19 points and 4 boards per game, while Green is averaging a pedestrian 11 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists.
These certainly do not look like all-star numbers. Another measure of an all-star is whether or not they can be the guy to take over a game, and while Klay Thompson has had a few dominant games, Draymond Green doesn’t seem to have the ability to do that.
What if we put Thompson and Green on a team as the two main scoring options, how far would they go? In the east, they might make the playoffs, but in the west, it is highly unlikely. Obviously, this is hypothetical, but if we really think about it, this may be just an average team. However, Draymond Green’s game is not to be a scorer and to be more of a team leader and all-around solid player, but with his stats does he really deserve the all-star nod? In conclusion, if we are only talking about numbers, it seems like Draymond and Klay seem undeserving of playing in the all-star game.
Obviously, we don’t know whether or not they would be able to dominate playing for another team, but as it currently stands, Draymond Green and Klay Thompson seem like they aren’t as deserving as other players who did not make the all-star game.
