Edmond Sumner Scouting Report

Measurables: 6’6”, 6’9” wingspan, 176 lbs, 21.4 years old

Strengths

  • Elite level physical tools – amazing size to play PG
  • Explosive athlete in the open court, shows up everywhere
  • Aggressive in the open court, finishes well
  • Good, not great athletic leaper/dunker
  • Fast finisher inside arc, uses length to advantage
  • Not afraid of contact near rim
  • Bursts straight to rim when lane is open
  • Great finisher, adjusts in space – 60% on high volume at rim
  • Sees over the top of defenses
  • Aggressive on D, length helps him a lot

Weaknesses

  • Injury concerns – 2 serious knee injuries, shoulder surgery
  • Can he regain his athleticism following injuries?
  • Already 21 – old for college sophomore
  • Vision as a passer still improving
  • Poor jump shot mechanics, misses go left and right
  • Flicks ball far too often
  • Gets overly aggressive at times, flings shots into larger rim protectors
  • Needs to play smarter on both ends
  • Point guard skills, decision making still developing
  • Needs to be a little stronger

Overall

  • Sumner’s elite finishing ability, size, and explosiveness are all attractive to NBA teams. However, his jump shot is a major work in progress and he is not quite a true point guard yet. Combined with his injury questions, this has him planted in the 2nd round. He has shown an ability to get into the lane, but given his injury history one has to wonder whether or not he’ll be able to do this against NBA competition. For now it’s safer to bet on other guys who don’t have the same questions, even given Sumner’s talents.
