The Braves have traded Gordon Beckham to the Giants.
With injuries mounting on the left side of the San Francisco Giants infield, the team went out and added an insurance policy in the form of Gordon Beckham.
The one-time top prospect was acquired from the Atlanta Braves for minor league infielder Rich Rodriguez.
The 22-year-old Rodriguez spent 2016 in High-A and batted .174/.209/.183 in 117 plate appearances.
The team also added a third catcher to the roster in Tony Sanchez.
To make room on the 40-man roster, San Francisco designated left-hander Matt Reynolds for assignment and put outfielder Mac Williamson on the 60-day DL with a quad strain.
Originally the #8 pick in the 2008 MLB Draft, the now 30-year-old Beckham hit .217 with a .300 OBP, with 5 home runs, and 30 RBIs in 273 plate appearances for the Braves this season.
For his career, he’s a .240 hitter with a .303 on-base percentage.
“With what happened there with Nuney, we felt we could use the help,” manager Bruce Bochy said.
The Giants entered play Tuesday just a half-game behind the New York Mets in the National League Wild Card race.
