Heat trade Shabazz Napier to the Magic

It’s funny, a few days ago stories came out that Shabazz Napier’s improved play could lead to him having a bigger role with the Miami Heat this season.

Well…  About that…

The Orlando Magic and Miami Heat agreed to a deal today that sees the second year point guard headed to the Orlando Magic in exchange for a protected, future second round pick.

In other words, the Orlando Magic got Shabazz Napier for absolutely nothing.

The Heat targeted Napier in last year’s first round largely due to the fact that he was a favorite of LeBron James, who they still hoped to keep in Miami.  But as James left for Cleveland, the team had no real interest in a player they didn’t want all that much in the first place, while shedding 1.3 million off of their cap.

Napier averaged 5.8 points, 2.5 assists and 2.2 rebounds in 19.8 minutes per game, shooting 38% from the field and 36% from 3-point range.  His ability to run a team improved throughout the course of the season.  Napier looked good in this year’s summer league, leading many to believe that he can emerge as a solid player off the bench in the future.

This is a good gamble for the Magic who could use a third point guard on the roster behind Elfrid Payton and C.J. Watson.
