Jake Browning is part of a strong class of NFL QB prospects.
Jake Browning has some NFL traits. He has a good command of the offense. He is an accurate passer and excels on short to intermediate passes. He throws with good accuracy when given a manageable throw. He has shown the ability to make the deeper passes and drop the pass into the bucket when given time. He has decent mobility as a quarterback with the ability to elude pass rushers and take what the defense gives him on running plays. He also has the ability to execute the quarterback sneak. I think his production is a bit understated because I was not impressed with the pass protection of Washington’s offensive line.
He doesn’t exactly attack you down the field though. His arm doesn’t allow for him to complete many deep balls or to the edge of sidelines. His decision making is very average and that is about the speed that he gets the ball out. I worry about him sometimes processing information as he makes some downright questionable throws. He will need to be more consistent in his decision making or NFL teams will take advantage of that. I think he will do better in a system that commands short passes and doesn’t attack downfield.
Browning is another NFL capable quarterback in a good quarterback class. I think he will be overshadowed by other talents like Mason Rudolph, Sam Darnold, Josh Allen and Josh Rosen. He seems more like the type that will need to fit into a more conservative offense and will probably start out as a team’s third quarterback with the hope that he develops into a number two. This puts my projection for him in the mid to late rounds like a Brad Kaaya. However, another year in college with a breakout season could make him an attractive quarterback in the early rounds.
