Jim Johnson has signed a two-year extension with the Braves.
The Atlanta Braves and relief pitcher Jim Johnson have come to terms on a new contract that will see Johnson sticking around in Atlanta for another two years.
The new contract will pay out at least $10 million in guaranteed money, which another couple of million available in incentives.
Johnson pitched for the Braves in 2015, accumulating a 2.25 ERA in 49 games, but was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers at the trade deadline. With the Dodgers, he posted an ugly 10.13 ERA in 23 games.
After the season Johnson returned to Atlanta on a one-year contract.
That was a smart move as the 33-year-old found his groove again with the Braves, posting a 3.06 ERA and 20 saves in 65 games.
In the process, he earned a nice extension and a hefty raise.
The Braves have already announced that Johnson will be their closer going into next season.
It’s interesting that Johnson has so much loyalty to Atlanta, as the team almost traded him for a second time in a year this August, with teams like the Blue Jays, Mets, and Rangers very interested.
Johnson was placed on waivers but pulled back after an unidentified team claimed him and the two organizations were unable to agree on compensation.
