Joe Banner: Peterson Would've Been An Eagle

This isn’t going to help Joe Banner’s in-city cred…

The former Philadelphia Eagles president told ESPN that if not for the lockout, Arizona Cardinals superstar cornerback Patrick Peterson would have been an Eagle.

While appearing on ESPN’s NFL Insiders show Wednesday, Banner laid out what would have been if not for the work stoppage.

“When we were in Philadelphia, we traded Kevin Kolb to the Arizona Cardinals for Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and a second-round draft pick,” Banner said. “The original trade was the fifth pick of the draft – which we were targeting Patrick Peterson for –- and the second round pick the next year. Because there was a lockout, we weren’t allowed to make trades leading into the draft or else Patrick Peterson would have been a Philadelphia Eagle.”

Instead, the Eagles ended up picking 26-year-old Canadian fire-fighting offensive guard Danny Watkins with the 23rd pick in the draft.

Watkins played two forgettable seasons in Philadelphia and was unceremoniously released in August of 2013.

Banner left the Eagles to become the Cleveland Browns CEO on October 16, 2012.  He was fired by the Browns on February 11, 2014.

He’s actually a fairly interesting follow on twitter.
