Mat Latos and the Chicago White Sox have reportedly come to terms on a one-year deal that would be worth $3 million.
Clearly the Sox are hoping that Latos’ terrible 2015 season was nothing more than an anomaly.
In 2015, the 28-year-old was 4-10 with a 4.95 ERA and 1.307 WHIP, numbers that were far worse than his career averages. He began the season with the Miami Marlins, was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers, was cut by the Dodgers and finished the season pitching for the Angels.
Both his 2015 ERA and WHIP were worst of Latos’ seven-year career.
For his career, Latos is 64-55 with a 3.51 ERA, 3.44 FIP and a 1.183 WHIP. He’s struck out just over eight batters per nine innings while walking 2.7.
Should the 6-6, 245 pounder regain his old form, this deal will look like an absolute bargin for the White Sox. If he doesn’t, then the gamble of $3 million was still well worth taking.
