Menu of Options for the Cleveland Browns at Quarterback

The Cleveland Browns have had a terrible season thus far. They have come into the bye at a dismal record of 0-8. They also were dealt a blow in trading for AJ McCarron. They reportedly completed the trade and then did not send it to the league office in time. At the same time, the other winless San Francisco 49ers have acquired Jimmy Garoppolo from the Patriots. They now have a quarterback that they can sign to an extension. That leaves the Browns without a plan again for the future of the quarterback position

Should the Browns look to draft a QB like Baker Mayfield?

Draft
The Browns are likely to have an early pick this year in the draft, and this draft is loaded with quarterbacks. The upcoming draft could include Sam Danold, Josh Rosen, Josh Allen, Baker Mayfield and Mason Rudolph. Even if the Browns don’t pick first, there will still be options at quarterback. If they like a guy, it may make sense to take another stab at a quarterback of the future. The problem is the Browns do not have a good track record of drafting quarterbacks. Also, Sam Darnold has admitted he may not come out if the Browns have the first pick.

Kirk Cousins
Kirk Cousins will be a free agent, and he has shown for a third-round pick that he can be the quarterback for a team. The Browns will head into the offseason among the leaders in cap space. This gives them a chance to sign Kirk Cousins. The downside is that he is likely to be the highest paid quarterback and only be a game manager. He will come as a mid-career quarterback.

A.J. McCarron
The Browns made a deal with the Cincinnati Bengals for AJ McCarron, and that is a sign that they could complete the trade again. McCarron has shown that he is more than serviceable. However, the upside is not as high as a Sam Darnold.

DeShone Kizer
The Browns may already have their answer in-house. It is possible that Kizer could develop into a good quarterback. He was drafted as a project and the Browns may want to put resources elsewhere and continue the DeShone Kizer project.
