For the time-being, Mike Conley has the NBA’s biggest contract.
The Memphis Grizzlies and their point guard Mike Conley have agreed on a mega-deal.
Conley’s new 5-year, $153 million deal would be (for now) the richest contract in the history of the National Basketball Association.
ESPN‘s Stats & Information research department has pointed out that it would also be the first deal worth $100 million or more total with an average annual value of more than $30 million per year.
Here’s the craziest fact: Mike Conley has never even made an All-Star game.
Yet, today he signed the biggest contract in NBA history.
It really is all about timing.
The 28-year-old Conley averaged 15.3 points, 6.1 assists, 2.9 rebounds and 1.2 steals a game this season. He shot 36% from three-point land and 83% from the foul line.
The point guard also met with the Dallas Mavericks on Friday but it was well-known that the Grizzlies were always the heavy favorites to retain the services of the underrated Conley.
Not to mention that the Mavs (and any other team that wasn’t the Grizzlies) could only offer a max contract worth about $114 million over four years.
This is a big day for the Memphis organization as they also secured the services of the Dallas Mavericks free agent small forward Chandler Parsons. The team is also reportedly looking into clearing enough cap space to make a run at free agent shooting guard Eric Gordon.
