Mike McCoy has been let go by the Broncos.
Here’s the deal. Was Mike McCoy given the most talented offensive roster to work with? No. He was given a roster without a franchise quarterback, a mediocre at best receiving corps, and an offensive line that can’t pass block. But McCoy also did himself no favors. Just look at the game against the Bengals. With the game hanging in the balance, 58% of the calls he made were passes while the running backs were averaging 4.1 yards per carry. He continually called 3 wide sets, which predictably led to an unblocked rusher getting right at a quarterback who already struggles with a clean pocket. He supposedly called plays that weren’t even practiced during the week, something that is completely unacceptable under any circumstances but is made worse by the fact that this offense struggles to even execute the scripted plays.
McCoy was brought in for his versatility in designing games plans, to limit turnovers, and to develop Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch. Instead, he brought a playbook that was so large it wasn’t practiced fully during the week, Siemian regressed dramatically, and the Broncos rank second to last in turnovers at 23. A midseason firing is always tough, but the Broncos need to see what their quarterbacks can do with a simplified offense before heading into the offseason that will feature several intriguing free agents and with a high pick in the draft.
Enter Paxton Lynch. His first start of the season will come against a Raiders defense that has been historically bad. They still haven’t recorded an interception through 10 games. They’re allowing a 72% completion rate against opposing qb’s. They’re tied for last in sacks at only 14. The six qb’s they’ve faced have combined for an average Passer Rating of 113.2. That being said, Lynch has been hurt all year so his practice reps haven’t been there all year. Hopefully, a simplified offense and a strong run game will help him transition into his first start against a very weak Raiders defense.
As the Broncos sit at 3-7 in a pathetic AFC and a disappointing AFC West, they are technically still in the playoff picture with upcoming games against the Raiders, Dolphins, Jets, Colts, Redskins, and Chiefs. Only one of those teams has a win rate above .500. Lynch needs to show the Broncos something in his first start that will inspire some confidence, and maybe spark a run or at least provide clarity on the quarterback situation heading into the offseason.
