Was Myles Garrett’s video out of line?
It would be a mistake to think that players do not already come into the league with preferences for certain teams. Some players want to be in a comfortable climate like San Diego or Miami. However, it is a not mistake to think players want to play for a winner. Sure there are some that play for the money only. Who could blame them? But to play in the NFL and succeed there needs to be something more to keep a player motivated during a grueling 16 game schedule. Players want to WIN! After all, these players have a goal, and that is to win Super Bowls. Winning even makes you more valuable on the open market.
Now we remember the draft fiasco where Eli Manning did not approve of being drafted by the San Diego Chargers. You have to think that was influenced by his father’s experience, having embarrassing seasons with the New Orleans Saints. Eli did take some bad press for lobbying for him to be swapped for Drew Brees. But in the end, Drew Brees went on to have a successful career and win a Super Bowl with another team (New Orleans Saints). Eli also won two Super Bowls with the Giants, a historically more successful franchise. So maybe not playing for a loser like San Diego paid off.
So this brings us to the story where Myles Garrett, the #2 prospect on Jake O’Brien’s latest draft board, (http://theunderdogsports.com/nfl-draft-big-board/) has asked Cowboys owner Jerry Jones to trade up to draft him. Garret later retracted the idea, saying it was a joke. (http://www.steelersdepot.com/2017/02/myles-garrett-pleads-cowboys-trade-browns-draft/) But was it really? Garrett would still be drafted high and paid highly, and he would get to play in Texas for the rising Cowboys. This would certainly be a great story for a Texas A&M player to come to the Cowboys and be the boost they needed to improve their defense.
But this story highlights a problem in the NFL. Although there are rules to create parody between teams like higher draft picks for worse seasons and a salary cap, there seems to still be a stratification of teams. The New England Patriots have won 14 of the last 16 division titles; (http://www.foxsports.com/nfl/story/patriots-claim-afc-east-break-record-consecutive-division-titles-process-121816) while; the Browns seem to be at the bottom year after year. Until the Browns start being more competitive, players will not want to be drafted by them.
