“The Music City” will soon become a soccer city. MLS announced yesterday that Nashville would be the next MLS expansion city, and will begin play in 2019.
Nashville becomes yet another MLS club in the Southern US, as MLS continues to fill in the map. Prior to 2016, Houston was the only MLS club in the Southern US, but then Orlando joined the league, and Atlanta and Nashville have quickly followed.
With only 2 professional sports teams in Nashville currently (The NFL’s Titans and the NHL’s Predators), so there is plenty of room in the Nashville sports scene for the currently unnamed MLS club.to make their mark.
The fan base is clearly there, as US Soccer’s last 2 stops in Nashville have resulted in sellouts. Atlanta United has proven that soccer can be a success in the South, so it will be interesting to see Nashville can also be an success story in Major League Soccer.
