NFL Draft Profile: Ronald Jones II

Ronald Jones is one of the more explosive runners available this year.

The USC Trojans are producing an impressive and quick back this draft. His burst is undeniable, and he makes himself a threat to make a splash play on offense. His speed is something teams will have to learn to respect. That translates into the ability to run routes and go deep for a running back. I think you could line him up in the slot even though it didn’t seem like he did that a lot in college. He also is effective in the screen game. He ran a lot of draws in college, and that is a play that suits him with his speed. He also has the toughness that you don’t expect from a running back his size.

There is one thing to worry about in his game, and that is that he can be hot and cold in his rushing. He will take one for a big gain and then the next minute be stopped at the line of scrimmage. I think he will need to go to a team with a good offensive line where he can rely on having holes to run through. I think there is a situation where you should take him out, and that is in goal-line situations. He has trouble having the power to overcome goalline defenses.

I think Ronald Jones II is a late first rounder or early second rounder. He did injure himself at the combine running the 40, but it doesn’t appear to be a serious enough injury that he would miss any time. He probably would start out well in a committee with another bigger back to take on shorter yardage situations. I think he his talented enough to become a starter in this league though. He will be an effective option on third down.
