Bulls forward Cameron Bairstow is headed to Detroit.
While the NBA Finals have yet to wrap up, the summer trading market was opened Friday as the Detroit Pistons sent guard Spencer Dinwiddie to the Chicago Bulls for forward Cameron Bairstow.
Bairstow is 25-year-old, 6-9 power forward who averaged 1.9 points and 1.6 rebounds in just under 6 minutes a game for the Bulls last season. The 2014 second round pick struggled to find consistent playtime for the club and saw his minutes drop even further with the emergence of Cristiano Felicio.
Dinwiddie is a 23-year-old, 6-6 point guard who averaged 4.8 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 1.4 assists in 13.3 minutes a game last year. Dinwiddie was also selected in the 2014 NBA draft, 11 spots ahead of Bairstow.
It’s worth pointing out that Dinwiddie had averages of 11 points and 9.5 assists in two games versus the Bulls, including his only NBA start in February. This is a nice gamble for the Bulls, Dinwiddie has a considerable amount of talent, but he hasn’t been able to fully showcase himself yet in his career. He’s never looked comfortable with the sporadic minutes he was receiving, and as a result of that, he shot just 35% from the field last season. If he wants to take his game to the next level, he needs to significantly improve his outside shooting (only 10% last year but he shot over 40% in 2 of his 3 seasons at Colorado).
Adding Bairstow now will allow the Pistons the chance to begin to evaluate him during the team’s summer league and decide if he’ll have a place on the roster moving forward.
This could potentially be the first in a series of moves by the Bulls have been rumored to be entertaining proposals for star Jimmy Butler and former-MVP Derrick Rose.
Recently, there has been a lot of talk surrounding a potential Rose trade to the New York Knicks.
