Two weeks in, the Chiefs look like big winners with the Kareem Hunt pick.
As we look back at the 2017 NFL draft, we have to look at players that are instant hits. Sure, it takes a few seasons to know how a player is going to develop, but the ones who are off to a fast start ought to be celebrated.
The biggest winner from the previous draft is Kareem Hunt. He started off his career and the NFL season with a fumble but never looked back after that. In his first game as an NFL player, he was said to have had the best opening game of any player. According to Pro Football Reference, Hunt rushed for 148 yards on 17 attempts and caught five passes for 98 yards. He also added three touchdowns in that game. In his second game, he ran for 81 yards and added two touchdowns in that game.
Another winner has come from the running back position. This is usually a position where players can be plugged in and can play early. The second winner is Dalvin Cook. In two games he has rushed for 191 yards on only 34 attempts. That means he is averaging five yards per attempt.
The third winner is Tre’Davious White. He was a late first round pick but has shown that he deserved maybe an even earlier pick. He showed promise in camp and has earned a Starting cornerback role. I projected him to start in the slot, but to need more time to develop as an outside corner. Davis has shown that he has not need as much time to develop. His stats are relatively average with three passes defended and eight tackles according to Pro Football Reference. However, earning a starting spot as a rookie cornerback is all the more impressive.
Now we will see as their careers develop if they were just fast starters or if they are fit to be perennial game changers in the league.
