The Oklahoma City Thunder have agreed to a long-term extension with 2016-2017 NBA Most Valuable Player Russell Westbrook.

The 28-year-old point guard has signed a 5-year, $205 million extension to remain with the team.

Adding this extension on top of his current deal gives Westbrook the largest total contract in NBA history at 6-years and $233 million.

This is obviously a huge win for the Thunder who, regardless of Westbrook’s public statements, had to fear losing their star in free agency next summer.

Last season Westbrook played in 81 games, averaging 31.6 points, 10.7 rebounds, 10.4 assists, and 1.6 steals a game while becoming the first player to average a triple-double over the course of a season since Oscar Robertson did it during the 1961-1962 NBA season.

This has been a huge summer for Sam Presti and the Thunder.  First, the team swung a deal to bring superstar forward Paul George from the Pacers to OKC and last week they acquired another star forward, Carmelo Anthony, from the New York Knicks.

With Westbrook locked up, the Thunder will now focus on trying to retain Paul George, who is on the last year of his contract and is widely believed to be interested in joining the Los Angeles Lakers next summer.
